I have created a private facebook group for all the Domestic Wildflower email subscribers and I’m so excited to invite you all to participate!
I remember reading a great mini tutorial for the uninitiated about social media platforms. Twitter is a one sentence snapshot of what I’m doing right now, Instagram is a (nicely edited) photo of what I’m doing now, Pinterest is who I plan to be, and Facebook is what I’m doing right now in as many sentences or photos as you’d like.
When I was starting to learn to can, I looked high and low for facebook groups that would be sharing recipes, advice, class lists, etc. and found lots of groups that were frequented by people who don’t frequent facebook often. It sounds strange but it makes sense. Facebook’s fastest growing population is those over 55, and those people aren’t online as often. I remember asking a question and the sweet member replied after a week, thoroughly of course and everything was properly spelled and punctuated, which I appreciated, but it wasn’t the kind of community that was thriving and full of people like me. It was full of people who already know how to do all the things I want to learn about and they weren’t online all that often.
So in the back of my mind, I have been thinking for a long time now that there was a need for a group for those interested in learning more about canning, sewing, and other fun, old fashioned DIY that I love to share on this blog and beyond.
And now, in honor of the blog’s one year birthday (I’m a little early but I couldn’t wait 🙂 I have created a space for us to do a variety of things.
The purpose is to share information, encouragement, and inspiration. The topics can include anything cooking, canning, preservation, culturing, sewing, knitting, furniture painting, homemade everything, etc, even if I haven’t and probably won’t cover it on the blog. I’m pretty sure I’d kill a kombucha for example, but that doesn’t mean you can’t share your kombucha success in the group- knock yourself out!
I have listed 3 topic guides that are exactly that; guides are not rules. On Make it Monday, we want to see what you crafted over the weekend, but if you finish your quilt on Tuesday, share anyway! Wildflower Wednesday is kind of my catch all day for event information, any fun thing you are working on or learning about that falls under our general handmade is better mindset. I’m imagining sharing articles about living rurally, raising babies of all species, recommendations for where to get vintage stoves refurbished- that sort of thing. Let’s keep this zone politics-free. I’m sure your regular feeds are filled to the brim with that sort of thing anyway. Read about who you want to vote for there 🙂 Food Friday will share your plans, questions, recipes, etc. This group is not responsible for the safety steps you should take in canning or any other activity. Get a trusted book and follow the directions, Dear Readers.
I also saw a need for a place to share information on canning classes, paint n’ sips, knitting circles, etc. Until there’s a calendar function on Facebook, we can use the “upload a document” feature to share schedules and event info. Share in the shared document section if it’s something a wide variety of people would be interested in or just on the regular wall if you’re not sure. I’ll see if I can keep up with my Nor Cal and So Or area but please share away because I’m sure I’ll miss something.
So, share your photos, your questions, your kind words, and join in!
If you are an email subscriber, you are hopefully already invited if you are reading this. If you are not, head to www.thedomesticwildflower.com/subscribe and do exactly that. I’ll send an invite your way asap. If you know someone who’d love this group send them there too, please.
This is going to be fun 🙂
If Facebook isn’t your thing, I have a fun Pinterest account + a group board just for my email subscribers (I just love you guys!). I have extended an invite to every subscriber so far, and I hope to continue to do so. Again, if I have missed someone, head here to join the Pinterest group board.
I’m really excited about this new community, Wildflowers. I hope you’ll share it with those you think would enjoy it to.
